A cleverly designed hoax convinced at least a few people that updating to iOS7 made their iPhones waterproof. Hat tip: CNET for capturing the screenshot
There’s a cruel and hilarious person somewhere out there who convinced a lot of people that their iPhones became waterproof when they updated to iOS 7. The hoax successfully mimicked Apple’s marketing. The layout and images all look distinctively Apple. The one problem is, of course, that iPhones aren’t waterproof, and shutting down certain components would be unlikely to do anything unless Apple also installed tiny fans within the iPhone to evaporate whatever water got inside the iPhone.
The sad (or quality schadenfreude, depending on your perspective) part of this is that some people were so enthralled with the iPhone’s new waterproof feature that they went ahead and dunked their precious iPhones:
I was literally just texting in the shower. Love this waterproof phone.— Colie ~(^3^)~ (@Mortalkombutt) September 24, 2013
The great thing about that one is that it wouldn't even work even according to the hoax, which says that the iPhone would shut down under water. Apparently it worked out for one shower.
The best thing about the new iPhone is that it's waterproof! Incredible.— Kevin Jaeger (@KevinJger1) September 24, 2013
Fortunately for Kevin there, he doesn't seem to be among the people who actually put the waterproof iPhone to the test.

Two minutes later:
Never mind. Definitely not waterproof.— a Sons Love (@sonslove23) September 24, 2013
And...it seems at least a few iPhones met their watery death. (Each tweet contains the same blacked out word, and your first guess is almost certainly right.)
Once more with feeling!
