Twelve-year-old McKenzie Michelle Carey was born as the apple of her father's eye, and he stepped up in a way only a daddy can when she was diagnosed with a life-threatening mitochondrial disease.
Her awesome dad Mike Carey focused on making the most out of his time with his daughter. He made her day and probably one of the most precious memories of her life by dancing with ailing McKenzie for the summer pageant. The father-daughter duo danced their way straight into our hearts.
Mitochondria are specialized compartments present in the cells of our body. They are responsible for creating more than 90 percent of the energy needed by the body to sustain life and support growth. The disease occurs when they fail to perform their function. As a result, less and less energy is generated within the cell, leading to cell injury and cell death.
If the cell damage continues throughout the body, the whole system begins to fail, severely compromising the life of the individual. The disease usually causes the most damage to cells of the brain, heart, liver, skeletal muscles, and the endocrine and respiratory systems.
There is something inspirational about the video of the father-daughter duo. It teaches you to look at life’s problems as a challenge and not a defeat. There is happiness to be found every day in life. McKenzie’s radiant smile at the end of the video proved just that.
According to McKenzie’s mother Tammy Michelle Carey, who is leading a drive to collect funds for her ailing daughter, their daughter is responding well to some alternative therapies to help treat her disease. These include hyperbaric oxygen therapy and intensive suit therapy.
We wish her a speedy recovery.
