People aren't just posting to social media — they're judging their self-worth by it. A growing number of people now depend on “likes” and “followers” for validation. It's a slippery slope to serious problems in the long run.
With more than 58,000 followers, popular Instagrammer Essena O’Neill shocked people by altogether quitting social media and taking a stand against it. With her new initiative, the Aussie teen wants to make people realize how social media is creating a “brainwashed generation” that relies on "likes" on their pictures to feel happy and beautiful.
Not posting any more pictures on the website is only part of her initiative.
So far, she has deleted 2,000 pictures from her Instagram account, and re-did the caption for many others in an attempt to show the truth behind picture perfect moments and flawless complexion.
Here are some of her Instagram photos:
The 19-year-old created a website to fight against social media and break the trend of posting everything on the internet to come across as perfect.
"I wish to create a platform that acts to spread new age messages of conscious living, [addiction] to technology, minimize the celebrity culture, promote veganism, plant based nutrition, environmental awareness, social issues, gender equality, controversial art etc,” she explained on her website.
O’Neill also shed light on what it is like to constantly wait for numbers on the screen to increase in order to feel beautiful and important. She not only wants people to realize the horrors involved in depending on people to approve of you, but wants to convey how her life changed once she stopped living for social media, and to fit in.
"I saw more, I listened more, I had more time,” she added. “I found myself becoming more and more creative, less stressed, happier and with this new sense of power.... but most of all I just felt more."
The Instagram queen is now encouraging people to move from in front of the screen, even if just for a little while, and go out, experience, feel things, and live a real life. She hopes to keep on posting video on her personal website, dedicated to promoting this change in people around the world.
