The War on Terror and subsequent invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq has cost more than 200,000 human lives and trillions of dollars. There shouldn't be an upside to this really – except there is.
The Internet is filled with images of devastation and sadness from these military interventions, but most of those are from the lens of photojournalists. One view that gets ignored is the pictorial account of those who were a party to these wars.
A recent Reddit trend whereby soldiers post photos of their deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq is fascinating. The raw nature of the images, their interesting backstories and the hilarious captions tell a fresh story of these wars and the people on ground- both who are in fatigue and natives. The galleries are intriguing but also eerie.

Starting off with the trip over to Iraq
Pimped out chrome plated AK
Bored, hot, and tired...just another day
We named the dog OP because he always hung around OP3
Taking cover from incoming rockets and mortars
This is our 5 star bathroom
Just gotta pee in the tube
Since when do wires grow out of the ground? oh wait....
Now we are off to Afghanistan. This is probably the best mustache I've ever seen. It just screams "I'm going to tie you to some train tracks."
Me taking a nap with my little buddy
We hooked him up with some water and some tuna
Never leave home without your combat goat
Found this piece of shrapnel in my turret after the truck in front of me got hit but an IED.
Halloween in Afghanistan
By the end of the deployment I’m pretty sure my blood was 50% Red Bull.
Hey Russia, you guys left your shit here.
They ran out of gas. Good thing we always bring extra.
They hooked us up for helping them out
We would find this stuff just growing randomly all over the place.
