On Tuesday night, French police engaged in a seven hour terrorist raid in the northern Parisian suburb Saint-Denis; during the raid, they unfortunately lost one of their most valuable team members.
Diesel, a seven-year-old Belgian Shepherd who worked as a police dog, heroically died during the siege. Her loss sparked a widespread response on Twitter—the hashtag #JeSuisChien (evoking this year’s earlier #JeSuisCharlie) emerged and went viral as the French mourned the brave canine who sacrificed her life.
While definitive details have not yet been disclosed concerning her death (a Tweet from French police simply stated she was “killed by terrorists in the ongoing operation”), reports suggest that the wife of Abdelhamid Abaaoud (the alleged mastermind of the Paris attacks) was wearing a suicide vest that she detonated when police arrived, killing Diesel.
A police handler referred to the death as “a little like losing one of our colleagues,” while one Twitter user felt she “died to defend our colours.”
Although five officers were wounded during the extensive raid, Diesel was the only loss of life.
