A man’s marriage proposal to his girlfriend during Tuesday night’s New York Yankees baseball game was nearly ruined when he opened an empty ring box.

As we’ve seen with many proposals before, a guy arranges to bring his girlfriend out onto the field or asks the camera operators to broadcast them on the Jumbotron.

Kneeling, he pulls out a little square box and presents a beautiful ring to his sobbing, shocked better half.

This latest proposal attempt is particularly notable because it went completely awry when the guy who organized the elaborate plan lost the engagement ring.

Upon realizing he lost the ring, what should have been a magical moment became an embarrassing one.

“Aw, look at this poor guy,” one of the game announcers can be heard saying in the video clip of the debacle.

Although the crowd mostly laughed, those seated around the couple banded together to help search for the ring and a scavenger hunt of sorts ensued.

After a few moments of watching heads bobbing around and torsos hunching over in the video, the ring is eventually found — much to the girlfriend's delight.

The entire ballpark erupted in cheers as the man carried on with his proposal.

Despite her partner’s mortifying blunder, she still said “yes” and looked genuinely thrilled to spend the rest of her life with her clumsy groom-to-be.

While both of their hearts likely stopped in the moments when they were searching for the ring, they can look back on this moment as one of the most memorable sporting event proposals of all time and they can revel in the viral fame they are getting from it.

They also have a hilarious story to tell their future children and grandchildren that will live on forever thanks to the internet.
