A picture sure can be deceiving, and this latest video of an optical illusion is the perfect example of that.
A video posted on Reddit has attracted the attention of more than 2 million people after it left all of them questioning their eyes.
At first glance, one sees a set of plastic squares in the hands of a man, but as the object is turned around, a completely different image appears in the mirror in front.
The video, which uses “ambiguous cylinders,” features the man including more and more shapes that automatically change into something completely different the moment they are placed in front of the mirror.
Kokichi Sugihara, the mastermind behind the entire illusion, not just shows the illusion but also reveals the trick behind it. Apparently the trick uses “reverse engineering,” and while one side of the shape set is in the form of squares, the other is in circles, which has viewers confused about what the real shape is. The actual shape in face is a mix of a circle and square, and while two sides of the object arch upwards, the other two are bent in, making it appear as different shapes depending on which side it is turned toward.
The mind-bending optical illusion all comes down to merging two shapes into one another, to form a third, different shape, and to design these shapes in such a way that they seem like different ones when held at various angles.
