It's 2014, and American politics are more divided than ever -- while approval ratings for Congress and President Obama are at all-time lows. The Democrats say the Republicans are trying to reduce the social safety to tatters, the GOP says Democratic spending will drown the nation in debt, and on and on it goes, in a never-ending cycle of vitriol.
Meanwhile, however, the influence of money in politics continues to increase. The wealthy few, who are able to bankroll entire re-election campaigns, can buy their access, leaving the rest of us effectively shut out of the process. In fact, a recent study reveals that America is not a democracy but an oligarchy, a system working for the interests only of those at the top of the pyramid.
