Not many people realize that but our Earth's water reservoirs aren't as vast as generally believed. Urban life has desensitized us to the wastage of this precious gift of nature, which is available in limited supply.
To raise awareness about this depletion in water resources and how our heavy usage affects others in underprivileged areas, an has made a PSA that leaves its viewers with a very strong message.
The video revolves around a young girl born in the slums of India. She goes through a series of unbearable hardships right from the moment she comes into this world but never sheds a tear. In her own words, "I didn't cry...not because I didn't want to but because I couldn't."
The message becomes clear when the next frame explains: "Extreme dehydration prevents your body from producing tears."
This story highlights how severe the shortage of drinking water is in some parts of the world. According to estimates, approximately one billion people on our planet are deprived of safe drinking water. If measures to control water wastage aren't taken now, it is believed that by 2025, more than half the world's population will be facing a major water crisis.
So when your school teacher tells you that nearly two-thirds of the Earth's surface is covered with water, she may be factually right, but the statement's perceived meaning is totally inaccurate. That's because 97 percent of the Earth's water is salty sea water that is not suitable for drinking. It leaves us with a very limited supply of drinking water – one that should be managed very efficiently unless we want to see real life version of that god awful Kevin Costner movie, Waterworld.
