As the classic saying goes: "A dog is man’s best friend." However, one unlucky pup was left devastated by her owners at a shelter while they went searching for her replacement.
A 2-year-old German Shepherd named ZuZu was ecstatic upon seeing her former owners arrive at the Los Angeles County shelter. Unbeknownst to her, the family wasn’t there to take her home but to find a completely different dog to adopt, according to The Huffington Post.
“With her fast wagging tail seeing her owners, Zuzu [lit] up like a Christmas Tree [sic]. She looked like the happiest dog. Yeah, she’s going home,” said shelter volunteer Desi Lara in a Facebook post Monday with video footage of the reunion.
“But No. Talking to her owners, they told me they were not here to reclaim her, they were getting another dog,” she continued.
The family reportedly said that they didn’t want ZuZu anymore because she had become unhappy following the death of her father. She eventually ran away from home and was picked up by animal control, which is how she ended up in the shelter.
Apparently, her family felt the best way to deal with her depression was to get rid of her altogether. It doesn’t get more callous than that.
Although ZuZu was visibly heartbroken, she may be better off without the people who would be cold-hearted enough to abandon her.
Lara’s post tugged on the heartstrings of many people throughout social media as it has garnered more than 700 likes and comments and has been shared nearly 4,000 times.
Several commenters were very perturbed by the actions of the previous owners and expressed their disapproval.
Luckily, on Tuesday the shelter announced that a rescue group offered to take ZuZu in. The organization has not been identified, but Chris Kim, a public information officer for Los Angeles County’s animal control, said that it would be up to the group to make ZuZu available for adoption or not.
Kim could not confirm if ZuZu’s original family’s search for another pet was successful the day they snubbed her, but he noted that the shelter was unaware of the heartbreaking back story until after Lara’s video was posted.
He also said that the shelter does reserve the right to not make a dog available to a particular owner if they appear to view pets as “disposable.”
Hopefully from the backlash the ordeal has gotten, the unidentified family has seen the error of their ways, and if they are lucky enough to adopt another dog, they will treat him or her better than they did ZuZu.
