This animated gif shows two kids dropping themselves on a railway track just before a speeding train arrives. One is left aghast as the train passes over them, but thankfully they are unharmed.
Were these kids just seeking thrills or was this stunt a desperate cry for attention?
Have we failed as a society to teach our children better?
Tim Gill of ‘Rethinking Childhood’ says, “Children’s appetite for experience and adventure - for freedom and responsibility - is hard to overstate. Daredevil pursuits, extreme sports and dangerous games are best understood as one expression of this appetite, which for some is so strong that it could almost be said to be a life force.”
For one reason or another, youngsters will take risks.
However, parents and elders around them must ensure that these kids do not feel neglected. Most of all, children should be taught that they can explore their inner daredevil, but within the realms of safety.
The presence of a grownup or two will allow kids to have their adventures and tame down their thrill seeking.
