It is currently “Nerd Week” over at Youtube, and to celebrate, The Slowmo Guys hosted an amazing water-balloon fight which they, naturally, filmed in slow motion! Over 1,500 fans joined in on the fun. The end result is a crazy, amazing video that must be seen to be believed.
I suppose water-balloon “fight” is a tad misleading. In reality, the video is more a water-balloon fireing line. Two brave men from the Slowmo team brace themselves, and then take on thousands of water balloons at once.
The result of the thousand-plus balloons is really cool. Basically, the massive volleys of balloons seemingly join together as one force and knock the men multiple feet backwards. I’m sure someone who understands physics better than me could explain the vector magic that caused the balloon force to combine.
I have some problems with the balloon throwers, however. I have no beef with those that simply missed – it happens. The throwers I have no respect for are those that gripped their balloons too hard when they threw them, causing the balloon to explode onto the unlucky soul in front of them. Yes, it’s important to get velocity on the throw, but there are ways to do that without gripping the balloon like it’s a jar cap.
Also, I know these guys are the slowmo guys and all, but the fast-motion view at the end of the video is more impressive. It is only at full speed that the force of the balloon wave is obvious.
It’s a rad video. Seriously, what video involving water balloons isn’t rad?
