The news still lives by the maxim, “if it bleeds, it leads.” Or, if you have a story about a dog who can do a great imitation of a siren and a story about a Pakistani cop finally succumbing to terrorists on his ninth assassination attempt, your front page story is the one about the cop. There are non-cynical reasons for this: the ugly stuff is important, and while it’s not fun to know, it feels wrong to not know. You don’t need to know about the dog, even though the dog is awesome.
Anyway, the news is mostly bad news, but there’s a lot of good going on, and a lot of reasons to think that 2014 might be the best year ever.
The news delivered by John Green in the clip above is all consequential and good (okay, except for the Colts making the playoffs, but we’re allowed our frivolous joys too). So, go ahead and get your news fix. For once it might feel great.
