"I felt I should be actively generating good in the world for every ugly verbal bullet sent my way," says Susan Carland.

Susan Carland, an Australian academic and wife of talk-show host Waleed Aly, is turning hate into love by donating one Australian dollar to UNICEF for every hateful message she receives on Twitter.

In a piece she wrote for the Sydney Morning Herald, Carland talked about how as a Muslim woman she regularly gets messages on Facebook and Twitter, with many people saying just because she is Muslim, she must love oppression, murder, war and sexism.

Some people even go to the extent of threatening her to leave Australia, and insult her on her appearance, specifically her hijab, and taunt her in one way or the other.

However, as she went on blocking, muting and ignoring such hateful messages, she decided to turn the hate into love by coming up with a brilliant plan.

Carland announced a charity pledge in October and since then has donated more than $1,000 Australian to UNICEF.

"I felt I should be actively generating good in the world for every ugly verbal bullet sent my way," she said.

Internet users are extremely proud of her and many have lauded her initiative:

Although, the hate messages haven’t stopped, Carland says: “I have a choice: to respond similarly, or respond with 'that which is better.' Their hate doesn't define me; my beliefs do. And so what my response should be is clear.”
