Bill Nye the Science Guy is here to explain some basic facts we should all know about poverty, in this video, produced by the Gates Foundation. There are a lot of myths out there about how much foreign aid the U.S. gives out and how much it helps. The short answers: a little and a lot. Those are relative answers, so here’s a little more context. The U.S. spends a tiny fraction of its federal budget on foreign aid, and what it does helps quite a lot compared to no help at all.
More funds, and, as Bill Nye explains, better targeted funds could drastically improve life in the developing world. Better health outcomes improve the economy, stabilize population growth, and eventually even strengthen democracy.
Those are all just side benefits, however. The real message is this: we can save millions of lives. This isn't about solving mysteries. It's about taking action.
