This Comic Strip Could Never Exist In Today's Paranoid World

It was many years ago that the legendary newspaper comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes" ran a Sunday strip featuring a fantasy that would never be published today.

Terror Rising

12-year-old Armaan Sing Sariah’s parents did not know where he was. They began to panic when he didn’t return home from school. Desperate, they began calling every police station they could until finally discovering that their son had been sent to a juvenile detention facility.

Outraged and confused Sariah’s parents eventually discovered that he had been imprisoned after another boy at his school jokingly accused him of having a bomb in his backpack. Authorities insist that it was Sariah who made the joke.

Either way, a child was locked up for three days and no attempt was made to understand the situation before the incarceration took place.

This incident is highly indicative of the gulag culture we are approaching in The United States.

The "Clock Kid" Ahmed Mohammed was arrested under similar pretenses and earlier this week the Los Angeles Unified School District shut down every one of its institutions in response to a threat that ended up being a hoax.

Two incredibly dangerous mindsets of paranoia and racial profiling are working in tandem to turn places that should stand for rational thought and childhood empowerment into high-strung compounds full of twitchy administrators with fingers on hair triggers.

Strangely enough, a comic strip from decades ago serves to show just how far towards rock bottom we are falling.

The Strip That Could Never Exist Today

It was many years ago that the legendary newspaper comic strip "Calvin and Hobbes" ran the following strip for the Sunday edition.

The strip earned celebrated creator Bill Watterson his fair share of angry letters but, on the whole it was dismissed as a humorous take on a childhood fantasy that many could identify with.

Today, however, Watterson would probably be arrested for daring to even broach the subject of attacking a school. The United States has reached a fever pitch of paranoia and stereotyping fear and it is the children who are suffering the most.

On  the Los Angeles Unified School District shut down every single one of its institutions in response to a bomb threat which ended up being a hoax.

When the schools aren’t shutting down they’re throwing innocent pre-teens into prison without so much as pausing to blink. This is not the way to a better, safer country. This is the way to madness.
