Oregon resident Craig Buckner is very attached to his pet parrot, aptly named Bird. So attached, in fact, that he brought Bird with him to the courthouse on Nov. 28 for violating a release after not appearing in court for drug and theft charges, CNN reports.
Before entering the courthouse, Buckner left his parrot on a tree outside (Bird is well-trained). Buckner didn't think he'd be going to jail, but the judge, in fact, ordered an immediate arrest, prompting major worry over his special companion.
According to KPTV, the deputy handling Buckner's case said he'd had the bird since he or she was hatched, which is why she pulled a few strings to get him safely back where he belonged.
"Mr. Buckner was already in a stressful position and did not need the additional stress and worry of his loved pet, Bird," Deputy Shoana McKelvey said after arranging for a friend to collect the parrot. "Our sheriff's office has very strong core values of doing the right thing. I also have very strong moral values of treating all people with compassion no matter what role I am taking."
Pretty respectable. Incredibly, the deputies allowed Bird into the booking area with Buckner.
Later, Bird struck a pose with Buckner in his mugshot, which will surely go down in criminal history.
