Will This Charity Campaign For Autism Become The Next ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?

Apparently, challenging others to do weird things is the best fundraising method.

Twizzler Challenge

The remarkable success of last summer’s ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has inspired a new dare that might soon become the next viral campaign for fundraising.

Known as the “Twizzler Challenge,” this campaign is a nightmare for germaphobes, as it requires two people to chow down on the opposite ends of a licorice stick for a completely noble cause – spreading awareness about autism. Much like its predecessor, the duo who completes the task must nominate others to do the same.

It all started with the Today Show co-host Willie Geist sharing a Twizzler with Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba during Comedy Central’s “Night of Too Many Stars: America Comes Together for Autism” to raise money.

He then continued the #TwizzlerChallenge with Meredith Vieira on her show, challenging Matt Lauer and Kathie Lee Gifford, who also chomped down on a Twizzler for the sake of autism awareness and nominated Jon Hamm and John Slattery.

The Twizzler Challenge

Since it’s fairly new, the campaign has not gained a great deal of attention – much like the Ice Bucket Challenge in its initial days. However, with all these hosts daring each other on live television, it’s just a matter of time before this awkward Lady and the Tramp inspired campaign turns into a viral charity.

Keep in mind, ALS Ice Bucket challenge raised $115 million in just a few months.
