Was the cross of Jesus Found? That is the question being asked by many as Turkish archeologists claim to have found the cross of Jesus Christ on which he was crucified. During an excavation of the ancient Balatlar Church in Turkey, archeologists found a stone chest with crosses engraved on it. And inside that chest, they claim, lie a piece of the cross of Jesus.
Head of the excavations, Gülgün Körolu, stated: “We have found a holy thing in a chest. It is a piece of a cross, and we think it was [part of the cross on which Jesus was crucified]. This stone chest is very important to us. It has a history and is the most important artifact we have unearthed so far.”
Of course many people are quick to doubt that this is really true since many churches have claimed to have relics of the true cross of Jesus as well. So how do they know if it is the true cross of Jesus they found? They don’t. The piece they found is undergoing lab testing.
According to Han J.W. Drijvers and Jan Willem Drijvers, authors of The Finding of the True Cross: The Judas Kyriakis Legend in Syriac, legend has it that Helena Augustas, mother of Constantine went to Jerusalem and found the true cross on which Christ was crucified. She then supposedly took pieces and distributed them to Rome and Constantinople.
