In a perfect retaliation to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's ceaseless racism, a new hashtag emerged during the final Republican debate of the year taking accountability for Trump’s bigoted rhetoric.
#WhitesAgainstTrump was first started by comedian and activist W. Kamau Bell urging whites to take responsibility for Trump.
“It is time, white people, for you to finally step up and recognize that you also (even more so) have a responsibility to your race. It is up to you to silence Donald Trump,” Bell wrote on his Facebook page. “Recognize that he is embarrassing you as a white person…Stop acting like Trump isn't the pinnacle and the result of America's history and tradition of white supremacy. And again, I don't care if you had no plans to vote for Trump or anybody, if you are white, he is your problem above all else. Simply put, white people, come get your boy.”
During the debate, Bell reiterated the call to action again with the below tweet:
Twitter was soon abuzz with white people condemning Trump’s unfiltered xenophobia that is reinforced by a deep-rooted sentiment of white privilege in America.
#WhitesAgainstTrump Because "Making America great again" doesn't entail fear-mongering and blatant xenophobia— James Ju (@SirJustinBarone) December 16, 2015
#WhitesAgainstTrump Because bully tactics and screaming tantrums should get you a time out, not a seat in The White House— James Ju (@SirJustinBarone) December 16, 2015
I think #WhitesAgainstTrump provides a great forum for us white folk to stop treating his frightening racism as a joke.— Crafting Change (@crafting_change) December 16, 2015
I am just another one of many #WhitesAgainstTrump but he is an actual embarrassment to us all— Caitlin Quinn (@TheCaitlinQuinn) December 15, 2015
As a white person, I'm offended by Trump. He's a lying sack of crap who's exploiting the fears of the bigoted. #whitesagainsttrump— K (@KsKM3) December 15, 2015
Instead of remaining quiet on the issue and shrugging Trump’s comments off as ludicrous jokes, white Twitter demonstrated that Trump's antics will not be tolerated.
