A North Carolina man was arrested for failing to return a video from 2002.
James Meyer was pulled over for driving his car with a broken brake light on Tuesday. Yet the interaction took a sour turn when Meyers was placed in handcuffs after the police officer informed him there was a warrant out for his arrest.
Meyers was charged for failing to return rental property — a misdemeanor — after forgetting to return the box office bomb “Freddy Got Fingered” from the now closed J&J’s Video in 2002.
"They're not here catching heroin dealers. They're chasing people for movie rentals from places that don't even exist anymore," Meyers said. "That blows my mind."
Meyers was given a court date, but the charge was later dismissed and instead he simply paid a fine of $200.
The abhorrently awful comedy’s star Tom Green got wind of the news and was just as shocked as Meyers. He even called Meyers and said he would have happily assisted with legal fees.
I just saw this and I am struggling to believe it is real. https://t.co/GrTXoUj29X— Tom Green (@tomgreenlive) March 24, 2016
In speaking with Australian TV show “The Project”, the actor deemed the scenario a testament to authorities’ abuse of power.
"I think it's sort of an example of how bureaucracy can get out of control," Green said.
