Liberal MP Mark Holland has announced his decision to fast in the month of Ramadan.
Holland publicized his statement at the Parliament on June 3, 2016, and said that fasting enables him to support his charity organization, “Give 30,” by giving away money saved from not eating to the needy.
The not-for-profit organization was founded in 2012 and fights hunger across Canada through its partnership with the country’s largest food bank.
Holland says his experience with fasting reminded him of the hunger poor people in Canada and around the world feel on a daily basis and motivated him to donate money to less fortunate people to whom “relief never comes.”
“When I fasted it was an incredible experience to feel what it was like to be hungry. Of course, I got relief at the end of the day, for many children unfortunately in Canada and around the world, that relief never comes. They have to make it through the day and try to learn and try to prepare for their future without the aid of food. This charity gives the opportunity to reflect upon that and use the power of Ramadan to help others.”
