A Chinese man arrested for alleged sexual assault claims he committed the crime because his family was pressurizing him to find a girlfriend.
The suspect, who has only been identified as a migrant worker in his thirties from Hubei province, Central China, was aboard a train travelling from Chongqing to Sichuan province.
He was “desperate to bring home a girlfriend for the Lunar New Year holiday,” according to the Chongqing Daily, so he crept into the bunk bed of a woman, a college student, in his cabin and tried to kiss her, without her consent.
The woman said she had met the man for the first time in her life earlier that day. He tried to flirt with her but she rejected his advances.
“When she tried to scream for help, the man forcefully covered her mouth with his hand before rolling back into his own bed,” the South China Morning Post reported.
She managed to escape after making an excuse to go to the bathroom and informed authorities on the train. Subsequently, the man was apprehended and removed him from the cabin.
During investigation, the man later revealed he was a migrant worker from Hubei province and that his family had been nagging him for years over a lack of a partner. He said they wanted him “to bring home a girlfriend during the Lunar New Year holiday.”
He is believed to have been detained for five days for molesting the woman.
