It was a tense weekend in the United States.
Following the separate, high-profile police killings of two African American men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, tens of thousands of people all across the country came out on the streets to demand justice.
The tension between some black communities and law enforcement agencies reached its peak on Thursday after a sniper shot 11 police officers during a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, Texas, resulting in the death of five officers.
Over the weekend, hundreds of people gathered outside the police headquarters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Sterling was killed, to protest the murder. The subsequent clashes between the BLM activists and the heavily armed riot police resulted in over 100 people being arrested — including at least three journalists and one of the most prominent faces of the movement, DeRay McKesson.
“Arrests were inevitable,” Col. Michael Edmonson, supervisor of the Louisiana State Police, said in a statement. “Our troopers maintained their poise and demeanor and focused on the job at hand, all the while enduring angry epithets and an occasional water bottle hurled from inside the crowd.”
