President Donald Trump is set to deliver his first State of the Union address tonight, and while most of us already know it will be chock-full of lies, he insists that he will be covering “a lot of territory.”
"We worked on it hard, covered a lot of territory, including our great success with the markets and with the tax cut," Trump told reporters on Monday. "And it's a big speech, an important speech, we covered immigration."
"And for many years, for many, many years they've been talking immigration, they never got anything done, we're going to get something done, we hope," he continued. "It's got to be bipartisan because the Republicans really don't have the votes to get it done in any other way, so it has to be bipartisan. But hopefully the Democrats will join us, or enough of them will join us, so we can really do something great, for [the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program] and for immigration generally."
Let’s take a moment to dissect this a bit. Trump has said he will discuss immigration, DACA, and the recently-passed GOP tax bill, all of which have been a far cry from “success.”
Here’s a glance at the truth.
The GOP tax bill is trash.
Big banks and large corporations are the only entities truly benefiting from this legislation as evidenced by the fact that Bank of America is rolling out a new policy that eliminates its free checking account program, punishing customers with low balances by slapping them with monthly fees they can’t afford.
Then, there’s Walmart, which announced that it would be using its tax break to increase its minimum wage for hourly employees to $11 and provide bonuses of up to $1,000 to its workers who have been with the company for at least 20 years. However, this news came on the very same day that the company closed more than 60 of its Sam’s Club stores, leaving the employees of those locations throughout the nation jobless.
Clearly, the corporate giant thought the wage hike and bonuses would cushion the blow, but it did not.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California) tweeted ahead of Trump’s address that the maker of Kleenex and Huggies is laying off thousands of employees as well.
Mr. President, looking for last-minute #SOTU topics? How about this — the maker of Kleenex and Huggies is laying off 5,000 employees. And they’re using your #GOPTaxScam cuts to restructure. Tell us, how do these cuts help not just the top floor, but everyone below?— Rep. Eric Swalwell (@RepSwalwell) January 29, 2018
His immigration policies are ripping families apart.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids and crackdowns have gotten completely out of hand since Trump has called for the deportation of undocumented “criminals.”
Trump insists that his efforts are meant to drive out undocumented immigrants with criminal histories, but how does he explain the upcoming deportation of Army veteran Miguel Perez Jr., who served in Afghanistan?
- Or Amer “Al” Othman, who was deported after living in the United states for nearly 40 years with no criminal record?
- Or the Greyhound bus in Florida full of poor immigrants that was ambushed by U.S. border agents who demanded all passengers provide proof of residency or citizenship — which is not required documentation to ride a Greyhound bus.
Several more of these erroneous arrests have occurred under Trump’s watch, including the harassment and wrongful detainment of American citizens.
He doesn’t give a damn about DACA.
Trump’s remarks to reporters suggest that Democrats are the ones holding up the DACA plan revisions. However, the truth is that he couldn’t care less about the “Dreamers” who are facing deportation despite having no control over their parents’ choice to bring them into this country. He is merely using DACA as bait to get his ridiculous and incredibly expensive border wall constructed.
Race relations are in terrible shape.
Earlier this week, Trump tweeted a response to comments made by rapper Jay-Z in which he asserted that he is the reason that the black unemployment rate is currently low, which is absolutely, positively untrue. In fact, former President Barack Obama deserves more credit for the African-American employment rate than Trump.
The unemployment rate among African Americans is indeed at a low point but it’s a continuation of an eight year trend that has little or nothing to do with @realDonaldTrump. pic.twitter.com/fSJKLamxcM— Ben White (@morningmoneyben) January 28, 2018
In reality, the only thing Trump has done for the black population — and all other minority groups — is make life a living hell.
With racists and white supremacists emboldened by Trump’s rhetoric, we’ve seen spikes in hate crimes, discrimination, and xenophobia throughout the entire nation — including super liberal states, such as California.
To be a minority in this country under Trump’s rule is to be constantly looking over your shoulder, checking to see if you are going to be the next target of a hate-filled, racist rant or racially-driven attack.
Trump has single-handedly reversed the work of the Civil Rights movement in the span of 12 short months.
He can’t escape scandal.
Before Trump, “Scandal” was just a hit television series developed from the imagination of Shonda Rhimes. Now, it is literally the plague our government can’t seem to shake. Trump may attempt to boast during his address about how much his cabinet is getting done, but the truth is, every time we turn around there is trouble in paradise.
We can hardly keep track of the number of resignations and terminations that have taken place in the past year. James Comey, Sean Spicer, Steve Bannon, Anthony Scaramucci, Omarosa Manigault, and Andrew McCabe — just to name a few — were all top officials who landed on the chopping block. It should be noted that none of their departures were amicable, either.
The reality is that we could go on and on about everything that is wrong with the state of the union, but Trump is still going to stand at that podium tonight and try to convince us otherwise. Do not fall for the charade. Stay woke, folks.
