Firefighters Rescue Teen Prankster Trapped In Giant Barney Head

An Alabama teen had to be rescued by the fire department after she got caught inside the giant, plushy head of Barney the dinosaur.

Darby Risner

A harmless joke turned into an embarrassing nightmare for Alabama teen Darby Risner when she got stuck inside the enormous head of a certain purple dinosaur.

The 15-year-old was at a slumber party in Trussville when she decided to pull a lighthearted prank on her friends. Slipping out of the room, she made her way down the stairs and grabbed the giant head of Barney the dinosaur that her pastor had bought from a local sale.

However, as fate would have it, tables turned and the horrifying prop, which Risner was balancing on her head, somehow slipped down her shoulders and refused to come off.

“Darby thought, ‘I'm going to scare them when they come downstairs,’” her mother Audrey Shannon told “She put the Barney head on and when she sat down on the sofa to wait for them, it dropped. It slipped over her shoulders. When they finally came down, she got up and realized it had dropped so low, she couldn't get it off. It was digging into her.”

Her friends and their parents tried to free the teen from the plushy head, but it just wouldn’t budge. Thy even applied Vaseline on her arms but nothing seemed to work.

Thankfully, her friends documented the entire ordeal and posted it on social media.

“It was hard to take her seriously as she was flailing her arms around. We laughed the entire time!” said Amy Self, one of the parents at the scene. “It never got too scary because we knew that she would eventually get out. There are air holes so we knew she was in no real danger.”

It wasn’t until Risner began feeling warm and nauseous that they all decided to call for help.

Shannon called the Trussville fire department and the firefighters were eventually able to free her by making a few cuts around Barney’s head with tin snips. This freed up enough wiggle space to pull it off her.

“When they walked in, you couldn't help but start laughing,” said Fire Lt. Vince Bruno. “We tried to be professional, and she was a little distraught, but we had to giggle about it.”

Risner was trapped in the fizzy dinosaur head for over 45 minutes. But now that she’s free (and suddenly internet famous!) she spears to be doing just fine.
