A state representative from Minnesota has just been destroyed on Twitter for making highly inflammatory comments on social media when discussing anti-racism protesters.
Republican Rep. Pat Garofalo took to Twitter to offer his solution to the group of protesters known as “antifa” after a pro-President Donald Trump “Patriot Prayer” demonstration in Portland, Oregon, was met by antifa counter-protesters.
On Twitter, Garofalo said anti-fascist protesters should be arrested and allowed to be thrown in a cell with “Bubba in Appalachia.”
The tweet, which has been since deleted from his account, stated the following:
“1) Arrest them 2) Hold them for 72 hrs before posting bail 3) Give them alone time with Bubba in Appalachia. #EffectiveRehabilition”
While the event that inspired this tweet may have allegedly involved protesters who also clashed with Portland police, the politician’s remarks appearing to advocate for rape prompted other Twitter users to respond immediately, attacking the legislator for joking about using sexual assault as a rehabilitation tool.
Gotta love how prison rape is just tossed in there like some normal part of incarceration.— WatchYourRepsMN (@WatchYourRepsMN) September 11, 2017
When called out for his crass remarks, the legislator simply acted as if critics were reading too much into what he had said.
Except I never said that. But the F in DFL has never stood for Facts. So you just go ahead and keep making stuff up.— Rep. Pat Garofalo (@PatGarofalo) September 11, 2017
Still, the fact his controversial tweet was later deleted may indicate that the Republican was aware that he had gone too far.
In the past, Garofalo made similarly absurd and crudely racist remarks on Twitter, saying that if most NBA teams would fold the next day, “nobody would notice a difference w/ possible exception of increase in streetcrime.”
After being harshly criticized for his comments then, he was forced to publicly apologize. Still, the 2014 incident seems to have had no effect on the legislator’s attitude over time. As a matter of fact, it seems that he only gets worse with time, appearing to advocate for rape and violence in order to “fix” those he doesn’t agree with.
