Heroic Dog Saves 7 People From Earthquake Rubble, Dies Himself

Dogs are certainly man's best friend, especially in life-threatening situations.

A yellow Labrador dog gave its life to save seven people, ultimately succumbing to immense exhaustion after it put tireless effort rescuing people trapped under debris from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Pedarnales, Ecuador, last week.

A Facebook post from the Ibarra Fire Service celebrating 4-year-old Dayko is quickly going viral. The pup spent his last day assisting the Ibarra Fire Service in tracking down survivors of the disaster. He had been doing the same for three-and-a-half years.

The hard-working Dayko died from “massive coronary myocardial infarction and acute respiratory failure,” and is now being hailed a hero for saving so many lives.

“This four-legged friend gave his life in the line of duty. Thank you Dayko for your heroic efforts in Pedernales and in various emergencies where you were present,” said one of the firefighters. “You held high the name of the K9 unit.”

The earthquake that occurred on April 16 claimed the lives of around 654 people, while around 2,000 others were left wounded.
