Bernie Sanders’ campaign manager said on Friday that his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton should apologize for stating her opponent is lying about Clinton's ties to the fossil fuel industry.
“I think she probably owes the senator an apology for that because the senator is not lying about her record," Jeff Weaver told MSNBC. "He’s talking about her record. He’s talking about her practices. She obviously doesn’t like it, but that doesn’t make it lying because you don’t like it.”
He further elaborated on the corporate campaign contributions that Clinton is clearly trying to keep secret.
“What the Clinton campaign is cagey about – it doesn’t really want to talk about – is the fact their super PAC gets money from people connected with fossil fuel industry,” Weaver said. “It is the lobbyists, it is the fact that they have lobbyists from the fossil fuel industry—just like they have lobbyists from the banking industry, the drug companies and frankly now we find out the gun lobby—who are giving them money, right, who are bundling this money and giving it to them.”
Hillary Clinton and her campaign have made more than a few gaffes within the past few weeks, from praising Nancy Reagan in helping the fight against AIDS, to refusing to debate Bernie Sanders until he fixed his “negative tone,” despite the fact that Sanders has not run a single negative ad against her and conducted one of the most positive campaigns in political history.
The tone comment sparked the hashtags #ToneDownForWhat and #FactsAreNotAttacks, as Sanders fans rightfully pointed out that the Vermont senator has only spoken the truth about Clinton’s record and the source of her donations; facts are not “artful smears,” as Clinton once accused Sanders.
All this escalated on Thursday, as a Greenpeace activist approached Clinton during a New York rally and asked whether she would promise to fight climate change and stop taking money from the fossil fuel industry.
Clinton aggressively responded, “I am so sick of the Sanders campaign lying about that. I’m sick of it.”
The Sanders campaign isn’t lying. Neither is Vice, FactCheck.org, the Huffington Post, Mother Jones, or the numerous other reputable news organizations that have all clearly outlined Clinton’s enormous ties to Big Oil and the fossil fuel industry.
Sanders’s rapid response director, Mike Casca, tweeted immediately, “Oops: Fossil fuel INVESTORS are pumping millions of dollars into Hillary Clinton's campaign,” and linked to a Vice article with the same title.
Vice notes that, “Fossil fuel interests have pumped $3.25 million into the largest super PAC supporting Hillary Clinton's candidacy for the White House,” and also specifies that individuals working in oil and gas have contributed individual donations to Clinton’s campaign totaling $268,000.
The Huffington Post goes even further, stating that Clinton’s “biggest campaign bundlers are fossil fuel lobbyists…Nearly all of the lobbyists bundling contributions…have at one time or another worked for the fossil fuel industry.”
This includes lobbyists for Chevron and TransCanda (which was behind the Keystone XL Pipeline).
The American public is, in fact, “so sick” of Clinton and other politicians taking money from these giant corporations and allowing donations to influence policy positions, while pretending that they are free from corruption.
If Clinton is sick of Sanders talking about her ties to the fossil fuel industry, maybe she should stop taking money from it.
