When doctors at a Milan, Italy hospital discovered parents who malnourished their child with a vegan diet, they had the baby removed from their custody, according to The Telegraph.
The doctors soon became aware of the poor state of the unnamed child upon noticing he had low calcium levels and had developed a congenital heart condition, according to recent blood tests.
Luca Bernardo, director of pediatrics at the hospital the child went to, weighed in on the parents’ decision to feed their child with a vegan diet.
“It is not a problem to choose different or unusual kinds of nutrition and we certainly do not want to enter into a discussion of the merits of the decision,” she said. “But since birth, the baby should have had support in this case with calcium and iron.”
Prosecutors of the case formally took the child out of his parent’s custody. A court will determine if the grandparents of the 14-month-old will obtain custody of him.
Although veganism has become a recent fad diet, it is inconsiderate for parents to force their children to eat vegan food.
The bodies of most young babies are not well-developed enough yet to consume a strict diet.
