Joe Scarborough began 2017 by getting into a vicious Twitter feud with a young reporter after he claimed the “Morning Joe” host “partied” with President-elect Donald Trump on the New Year’s Eve.
The argument started after The New York Times reported Scarborough and his MSNBC co-host Mika Brzezinski were present at the billionaire business mogul’s extravagant gala at Mar-A-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Sopan Deb, a journalist who covered Trump’s presidential campaign for CBS and will soon join The New York Times as a culture reporter, shared the story on his social media account, pointing out that earlier this year the incoming commander-in-chief had thanked the duo for being his “supporters.”
Scarborough, whose relationship with Trump made headlines during the election, took offense at the tweet, claiming he attended the celebration in hopes to set up an interview with the former reality TV star and that he left the event before any “partying” started.
Partied? You're very good at pushing fake news. You should write for CNN. Apparently making up facts is fine if you're writing about us. https://t.co/mCe0EYghRB— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
The former U.S. representative then launched into a full-blown rant.
Last year, Trump publicly thanked David Axelrod for his support. Stop being such a hack. https://t.co/mCe0EYghRB— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
One of the more entertaining aspects of media coverage of media is how so many who blast Trump for half truths attack us with half truths. https://t.co/mCe0EYghRB— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
Last year I said Trump's campaign was racist, xenophobic and disqualifying. But be snide while making facts up. Partied? Not even close. https://t.co/mCe0EYghRB— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
Deb was quick to hit back:
The fight just escalated from there.
“The event was black tie. Both Mika and I were in casual clothes, did not attend the party, and left before any ‘partying’ began,” Scarborough continued. “Nothing that Mika and I did in setting up this meeting was any different than what all good reporters and news hosts try to do daily.”
He also claimed he had a “preset meeting with PEOTUS.”
5. Anyone suggesting otherwise is a hypocrite who ignores what great journalists from Ben Bradlee to Tom Brokaw have done for years.— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
I can't think of a presidential candidate who thanked Brokaw and Bradlee for their support, but I'm just a liar who makes up news. https://t.co/Hjq5XF3dD1— Sopan Deb (@SopanDeb) January 1, 2017
Deb later tried to clarify his statement by saying “attended is more accurate.”
1. Thank you for that but I did not "attend" the party.— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
2. We walked through metal detectors and around the area guests were. https://t.co/xSXDVK5nNJ
3. We went directly to where security guided us. Were stopped for 30 seconds by people who watched the show.— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
4. Went up to the meeting. https://t.co/xSXDVK5nNJ
That is not, by any reasonable definition, "attending" the party. https://t.co/xSXDVK5nNJ— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) January 1, 2017
Earlier this year, CNN Money claimed that Scarborough and Brzezinski were good friends with Trump and his family.
“Scarborough, a former four-term congressman from Florida's 1st district, has often stayed at Trump's Mar-A-Lago Club, in Palm Beach, Florida, with his family and was there during the week between Christmas and New Year's,” read the report, adding the close ties between the “Morning Joe” host and the then-GOP frontrunner had become problematic for the NBC officials.
However, few months down the road, the two purported friends seemed to have a bit of a falling off.
You heard wrong, cowboy. We talk about scenarios. Never fear. MJ is going to beat CNN for the 7th straight year! ?? https://t.co/DVsBHctzgd— Joe Scarborough (@JoeNBC) May 6, 2016
“Donald, guess what, I’m not going to support you until you get your act together,” Scarborough ranted on his show in June. “You’re acting like bush-league loser, you’re acting like a racist, you’re acting like a bigot … Until you…prove to me you’re not a bigot and you don’t take my party down in the ditch, you don’t have my endorsement.”
