Ever since Donald Trump won the election and became the 45th president of the United States, there has been a sharp uptick in violent crimes and assaults across the country.
The nation is more divided than ever and no one seems to be in the mood to tolerate another’s political views — particularly some Trump supporters, who have taken to harass everyone who doesn't agree with their candidate’s hateful rhetoric.
Case in point: A male Trump loyalist reportedly punched a 49-year-old woman in the face after an argument over politics. The incident occurred when the victim was enjoying dinner with her friend at Bar Tabac, a restaurant in Brooklyn, New York.
As the story goes, two female Clinton supporters were sitting together on a table, eating dinner and discussing politics when a couple seated next to them, who turned out to be Trump supporters, began arguing with them. The women then requested to be moved, so the staff accommodated them by moving the Trump-loyalist couple across the room.
After finishing their food and paying the bill, the couple left the restaurant. However, a few moments later, the man ran back inside and punched the woman he was previously arguing with, right in the face.
“The guy came back almost running, and he started pushing some customer and the high-chair next to him with the baby because he couldn’t reach the girl,” Manager Jonas Leon recalled. “Then he punched the girl.”
When the 27-year-old ran after the bully, he began insisting he was somebody important.
“You don’t know who I am!” the man reportedly yelled.
In a separate interview, Leon described both the assailant and his wife as “very aggressive.”
“We took care of them. We gave them another dish,” he said, referring to the victim. “Every customer was so nice. Our customers are like a big family.”
However, thanks to the current political unrest in the country, Leon believes this would not be the last incident of the sort.
“I think it's going to be more and more frequent, this kind of situation,” he told New York Daily News.
Sadly, another patron, who got up from her table to console the woman, also shared Leon’s sentiments.
“I went up to her and she just held me and started sobbing and said ‘What is happening? I just got assaulted,’” said Katie Freeman, who was eating at the restaurant with her toddler at the time. “In my own neighborhood post-election it has felt like a liberal bubble where everyone has been grieving together. It felt really startling and it made me feel a little less safe.”
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio also weighed in on the incident
Meanwhile, Bar Tabac posted the following statement on their Facebook page:
“We at Bar Tabac do not condone violence of any type or manner, especially in our own establishment; to the tough guy who assaulted a female patron of ours on Saturday night over a political conversation: Once the law is done with you, do not come back to Bar Tabac (this includes your partner). At a point in this nation when tensions are highest we need to come together now more than ever, we apologize to any customers who had to witness this vulgar outburst.”
NYPD is still on the lookout for the perpetrator, described as 5-foot-6 with straight hair. The man was last seen wearing black sneakers and a black overcoat. The restaurant management described him as being in his 40s and having a buzz cut. He paid with cash instead of a credit card.
