Twitter has exploded with a new hashtag in response to some hateful rhetoric spewed by Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz in the wake of the Brussels terrorist attacks—and it’s making an incredible point that many should hear.
In a statement on Tuesday, shortly after the horrid attacks in Brussels, Cruz said:
We need to immediately halt the flow of refugees from countries with a significant al Qaida or ISIS presence. We need to empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized. We need to secure the southern border to prevent terrorist infiltration. And we need to execute a coherent campaign to utterly destroy ISIS.
His statement did not go over well in the Muslim community.
“Let us be clear: targeting Americans based solely on their faith is not only bigoted and wrong, it undermines our safety by wasting precious law enforcement resources,” the California-based legal advocacy group Muslim Advocates said in a statement Tuesday. “Now more than ever, we need law enforcement focused on following legitimate leads and credible intelligence, not engaged in blanket, unconstitutional surveillance.”
His unethical, unconstitutional, and irresponsible call for surveillance, along with Donald Trump's suggestion that torture be used more readily, was met with an incredibly positive and powerful hashtag: #MuslimNeighborhood.
In an effort to show just how ridiculous and unnecessary this kind of surveillance would be, twitter users decided to give Cruz a small taste of what their Muslim neighborhood is like, sharing photos of family, friends, and members of the community working hard to make the world a better place.

My #MuslimNeighborhood is snowed in now and my Muslim dad is shoveling our elderly neighbors sidewalk while they sleep, how horrible.— Wagma (@wagmamommandi) March 23, 2016
