As the wave of hate crimes in the United States persists, a Minneapolis man has been charged with assault after biting and stabbing a Somali man.
According to Mic, Kelvin Porter, 47, set out to kill a Muslim. Surveillance footage showed Porter confronting his victim on a sidewalk. The victim could be seen raising his fists, at which point Porter stabbed him several times and bit him on the face.
His attack was interrupted when another man intervened and threw a trash can at them, which is when the Somali man broke free and fled.
The victim reportedly sustained wounds to his hands, face, abdomen, and left shoulder. He was treated immediately following the incident.
Porter shouted "I hate Muslims!" while in police custody and even admitted to them that he was trying to stab the Somali man in the neck.
He has since been charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He could face up to seven years behind bars and may be fined $14,000.
Although it seems like a no-brainer, Porter has not yet been charged with a hate crime. According to Mic, Minnesota prosecutors said such a decision wouldn’t come until later in the court proceedings.
However, the Council of American Islamic Relation’s Minnesota chapter (CAIR-MN) is calling for state and federal hate crime charges to be brought against Porter.
“The suspect's own statements, as related to police, would indicate an apparent bias motive that should result in additional charges or enhanced sentencing if he is found guilty,” said CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein in a statement.
Porter’s actions are reminiscent of the recent stabbing death of 66-year-old Timothy Caughman at the hands of white supremacist James Harris Jackson, 28, who took a bus from Baltimore to New York City with an agenda to kill black men in an effort to discourage interracial relationships.
Looks like operation “Make America
Great Hate Again” is in full swing.
