A horrifying video footage from a Chinese fairground shows the moment a ride carrying dozens of passengers collapsed, slamming passengers to the ground.
The ride at a festival in Xihe County was about 5 meters up, rotating as it was supposed to, when the iron column holding up the ride collapsed, in turn causing sparks. The top frame holding suspended chairs then smashed downward as shocked bystanders began screaming in panic, following the loud bang.
At least nine people, including one child, were injured from the crash, while others remained trapped under the ride until they were rescued. Eight of the injured people were taken to Xingkang Hospital Observation for a check-up while one person who was seriously injured was rushed to First People's Hospital in Tianshui City.
“Fortunately, it was not completely into its cycle, because if it was it would've been much higher up and more people would have been hurt,” said one bystander about the ride.
So far, the cause of the accident remains unknown, but the owners of the facility have been detained police for further questioning and investigation into the matter.
The accident occurred on the first night of the Liu Chengcun Wangya temple fair and the ride is closed.
This is not the first time such an incident has taken place in China. Just last month, a 14-year-old girl died after being thrown out of a malfunctioning swing ride called “A Journey in Space” at Zhaohua Park in Fengdu County. Although passersby tried their best to save the teen, she was rushed to hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
