GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump has been garnering much press lately, from the good to the bad and ugly.
Director Rob Reiner appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe talk show and went ballistic over the anchors’ conservative discourse surrounding Trump’s politics. While promoting his latest film, “Being Charlie”, Reiner could not help but turn the conversation over to a rampage against the Republican presidential candidate.
He called Trump supporters racist, much to the shock of hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski - both of whom promote Trump on their show. “There is racism in this country that has been submerged for a long, long time and all of a sudden there’s a man who has unearthed a lot of it,” Reiner said.
The comedian called Trump a raving lunatic, saying that if Trump wasn’t a celebrity but a man in a park shouting the things that he says, we would all just walk right past him.
Reiner expressed concern over Trump’s popularity in the media based on his celebrity status, but said that our focus needs to be on what actually comes out of Trump’s mouth. “Who cares about ratings? What does he say?” he repeated, getting angry at the hosts.
Joe Scarborough accused Reiner of “being Trump” because he wasn’t letting anyone else speak.
Reiner pressed the point that Trump needs to be held accountable for the “how to” behind his big promises. Most pressingly, Reiner noted that the media is responsible for swaying votes and needs to play a role in preventing Trump from becoming president this election.
