Donald Trump has gone from being pro-choice to absolutely insane when it comes to women’s rights.
During an MSNBC Town Hall set to air Wednesday night, host Chris Matthews asked Trump not to “dodge” the question of how to enforce abortion (as Trump is apt to do)—Matthews clearly asked, “If you say abortion is a crime or abortion is murder, you have to deal with it under the law. Should abortion be punished?”
As Trump equivocated, Matthews followed up sharply: “You say you want to ban it. What does that mean...Do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no, as a principle?”
Trump finally admitted, “There has to be some form of punishment.” Matthews clarified, “For the woman?” to which Trump responded in the affirmative.
Matthews appeared taken aback and asked him what form of punishment he thought was necessary—“ten, twenty years?”—but Trump refused to elucidate further, claiming that it would “have to be determined.”
Twitter responded to Trump with the hashtag "Won't Be Punished," defying the real estate mogul (and consequently all conservative, anti-choice politicians) over Trump's reprehensible proposal while also simultaneously educating them on reproductive rights.
If pro-lifers believe women are victims, why do they harass and demonize them as they enter clinics, & force ultrasounds? #WontBePunished— Tami (@Redhead_Tam) March 30, 2016
I feel now is a good time to mention that 97% of rapists never see a day in jail. So tell me more about punishment, Donald. #WontBePunished— Danielle Templeton (@D_Templeton96) March 30, 2016
Women #WontBePunished for having bodily autonomy. Abortion is legal and we won't go back. Full stop.— Katie Worley (@_katiekins) March 30, 2016
Get it through your skull: it is NONE of your business whether a woman wants to carry a pregnancy to term. #WontBePunished— Matthew Chapman (@fawfulfan) March 30, 2016
The fact that women are facing such an immense attack on their reproductive rights in 2016 is unimaginable. Roe v. Wade was set by the Supreme Court in 1973, and 45 years later we still see unbelievably backwards logic from leaders and politicians who attempt to restrict one of women’s fundamental rights.
Trump’s belief that women deserve to be punished for having an abortion just cements the fact that he is an absolute misogynist. On Tuesday, he was unashamedly mocking a female reporter who was battered by his own campaign manager. He has made dozens of sexist and disgusting comments, but this latest one may have reached a new low, even for Trump.
