A small town in Illinois that supported President Donald Trump and voted for him is now backing a detained immigrant.
The Trump supporters expressed anger toward the commander-in-chief’s contentious policies after the officers from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested the town’s lovable Mexican restaurant owner, Juan Carlos Hernandez Pacheco.
Pacheco isn’t just an ordinary immigrant; he has been a role model to many people living West Frankfort and his restaurant, La Fiesta Mexican, has been in town for a decade now.
West Frankfort Mayor Tom Jordan was all praise for the 38-year-old man, describing him as a “great asset” to the community who “doesn’t ask for anything in return.”
Along with the mayor, the police chief, the high school athletic director and the county prosecutor have all sent out letters of support for the local business man, praising him for his robust civic involvement, including funding school scholarships, benefit dinners for families in need and hosting a law enforcement appreciation event.
“I think people need to do things the right way, follow the rules and obey the laws, and I firmly believe in that,” said Lori Barron, the owner of a beauty salon. “But in the case of Carlos, I think he may have done more for the people here than this place has ever given him. I think it’s absolutely terrible that he could be taken away.”
Pacheco’s wife and three children are U.S. citizens. His wife hopes her husband can come home and “continue his efforts on becoming an American citizen, something that he has wished for a very long time.”
Meanwhile, authorities have not given any reason of arresting the restaurant owner.
The very same town that supported Trump, despite knowing his stance on such matters, now wants a special treatment because this time ICE detained someone they look up to. Did they, or other Trump supporters for that matter, not know about the business mogul’s plans to deport millions of undocumented immigrants?
