While it has become common practice for Donald Trump supporters to attack protesters at campaign rallies — with Trump instigating and celebrating their mob-like behavior — an incident in North Carolina is rightfully sparking incredible outrage.
On Wednesday night, a black protester was among a group being escorted out of the rally venue by security.
Just before making it to the top of the stairway, a white, pony-tail and cowboy hat wearing Trump supporter reached into the aisle and punched the innocent man in the face.
What makes matters worse is that the security grabbed and detained Rakeem Jones — the man who was assaulted — and did nothing to the culprit who hit him.
Furthermore, after Jones was kicked out, he was arrested by North Carolina deputies while the man who struck him carried on enjoying the racist, fascist rhetoric that Trump was undoubtedly spewing.
“The police jumped on me like I was the one swinging… My eye still hurts,” Jones reportedly told The Washington Post. “It’s just shocking… It’s like this dude really hit me and they let him get away with it. I was basically in police custody and got hit.”
None of the videos posted of the incident show that Jones even tried to strike back. He reacted to the blow and put his arm up, but continued walking up the stairs only to be tackled to the ground by deputies.
"After I get hit, before I could even gain my thoughts, I’m on the ground getting escorted out," Jones said.
The Sheriff’s Office said the situation is being investigated by the internal affairs unit. Sgt. Sean Swain claimed that it’s a possibility that the officers weren’t aware of the assault when it happened.
“Right before the gentleman punches the protester, the heads of the deputies are down,” Swain said. “I don’t think the officer coming up the stairs [behind the protester] saw what happened.”
Let’s just take a moment to point out that the man who sucker-punched an innocent protester who was already on his way out of the event is absolutely, positively not a “gentleman.”
You can see in the video footage that there were several deputies escorting the group out so there is no way that not a single one of them saw the punch.
As the incident has unfolded, the assailant has been identified as 78-year-old John McGraw and he has since been charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct, Reuters reports.
This situation just further exemplifies the kind of mentality and behavior Trump incites. In addition to being racist, his supporters are aggressive and rowdy. These are the people propelling Trump’s campaign forward so he can make his way into the White House and carry out his plans to make America HATE again.
