Tennis Player Wins Match After Cutting Off Her Ponytail

Svetlana Kuznetsova took drastic measures during a match against opponent Agnieszka Radwansk — to sweet pay-off. One ponytail missing, and one winning title secured.

One tennis player really, really wanted to win the game against her opponent — so, naturally, she hacked off her hair. Because that’s what one does to claim victory, right?

During a group-stage match, Russian tennis star Svetlana Kuznetsova did just this after winning the first set, ESPN reports. She was versing Agnieszka Radwanska, another professional player, and was beginning to fall short.

In the middle of the changeover, Kuznetsova, number nine ranked player, casually took scissors to her hair. Watch the clip:

You can hear the shock of the sports reporters: “You ever done this before, Alicia?” “I can think of two reasons: One, she’s feeling heavy on the cord and taking a bit of weight off. Potentially, it’s just really at an awkward length where it’s clearly disturbing her.”

According to Yahoo, Kuznetsova later explained it was for practical purposes.

“It was bothering me a lot,” she said. “I was trying to put it behind my headband, but my hair is very thick and heavy. In the end, when I was hitting the forehands, every time I would hit a good shot, it would hit my eye every time and I was struggling."

The Twitter reactions from fans did not disappoint:

The craziest part? Kuznetsova didn’t even look in the mirror or ask anyone on the court how she was faring with the lob. She just up and cut it like it was the smallest deal in the world. No fussing; just chopping.

And perhaps it really was nothing. After all, Kuznetsova went on to defeat Radwanska 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. The lost ponytail is likely a small price to pay for a major sports triumph.
