Basketball season may be over, but NBA star LeBron James has remained in the spotlight for his contributions to his community and his social activism.
As a result of his commendable actions, people have started circulating a petition calling for James to replace Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. Thus far, more than 16,000 people have signed the document on thepetitionsite.com.
"LeBron James is an inspiration to kids all over the country," the petition reads. "He's shown he cares about America's youth and understands the power of public education in helping children meet their true potential."
The petition makes note of the I Promise School’s many offerings, including on-site job placement for parents and guaranteed college tuition to the University of Akron for every graduating student, and even free bicycles and helmets.
Conversely, the petition criticizes DeVos and her lack of experience as having never set foot in a public school prior to becoming education secretary and her documented track record of going against teachers and expressing negative views of the education department which she oversees.
Although it isn’t likely that James would trade his lucrative and successful NBA career for politics — especially under the current administration — the initiative speaks volumes about who Americans are viewing as the real leaders in this country.
The irony in all of this is that months ago, Fox News host Laura Ingraham asserted that James and other outspoken athletes should stay out of politics and stick to sports. Yet, the public’s response to James’ humanitarianism and the amount of signatures on this new petition are great indications that he is doing something right by loudly and boldly refusing to “shut up and dribble.”
