Some people find love with others through websites like Facebook or even Tinder. But rarely do you hear of a love story that involves eBay.
Amanda Liberty is a 33-year-old British woman who has an atypical relationship with her chandelier, whom she named Lumiere.
“As soon as I saw Lumiere on eBay, I knew immediately that she was the one for me, and it was love at first sight,” Liberty said. She spent over $500 to ship the 90-year-old antique to her residence in Leeds.
“She was based in Germany, and although I knew it would be tricky to get her home, I knew I needed to find a way to make her mine,” she added. “I couldn’t stop thinking about her and how beautiful she was.”
Liberty is an objectum sexual, which means she finds objects sexually attractive. The preference, although rare, should not be confused with a fetish; objectum sexuals have real emotions of love for the objects they hold dear.
Chandeliers have been a part of Liberty’s life for quite some time now. Before Lumiere entered her life, she owned 24 chandeliers, all of which she explained are in an “open relationship” with her. Liberty often snuggles with and even kisses Lumiere, but sometimes sleeps beside a different one named Jewel because its more portable than the other fixture.
“I’ve always loved the look of chandeliers, and when I saw my first chandelier, Luna, it was love at first sight,” she said, explaining her fascination with the decorative light fixtures.
But make no mistake: Liberty and Lumiere are very much in love. Last Valentine’s Day, the two took the next step in their relationship and got engaged. She even has a ring hanging from her beloved chandelier.
“I hope at some point we will have a commitment ceremony — I haven’t been engaged before so it’s very new and exciting,” she said.
Chandeliers aren’t the only objects Liberty’s been attracted to in the past. At age 14, she said she was attracted to a drum kit, and later, on a trip to the United States, she even fell in love with the Statue of Liberty — which prompted her to change her last name.
Liberty said she realizes that some people don’t understand her relationships.
“People often can’t understand that this is just a natural orientation for me, that I can find the beauty in objects and can sense their energy,” she said.
But for those who don’t understand, she explained in a recent Facebook note that she does her best to ignore them.
“I don’t take any notice of idle comments that have been made without any thought behind them,” she said.
