A man is being hailed a hero after moving with remarkable speed to save a pensioner on an escalator in east China's Shandong province.
The incident, caught on CCTV camera, occurred on Jan. 6 when an older woman lost her balance on an escalator in a real estate registration center in Yantai.
In the blink of an eye, a clerk from behind a desk sprinted to the moving staircase to help the woman.
People’s Daily China reports “it took him no more than three seconds from seeing to saving the old lady.”
The man has been identified as Yu Haohan. "I was working when I heard the commotion over there," Yu said, according to Channel News Asia. "I turned around, and saw that an elderly woman or man had fallen on the escalator."
Although he works at the real estate registration center, Yu served as a soldier for eight years, Channel News Asia reports. He also took part in relief work after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake hit southwest China's Sichuan province in 2013.
"Subconsciously, I knew I should offer my help if a person is injured or in need of help. I think that's what one should do," he said.
