French President Francois Hollande recently visited his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo to sign an arms deal boosting military ties between the two nations.
However, the trip took a traumatizing turn for both Hollande and French people everywhere when the Egyptian National Orchestra tried to honor the French leader by playing his country’s national anthem – “tried” being the operative word.
The performance, to say the least, went rather poorly. Either the army band had never heard “La Marseilllaise” until the morning they had to perform it, or they are just tone-deaf and have no idea how music actually works because what they played, sounded nothing like the French anthem.
As for Hollande, he had to sit through the entire musical mayhem, watching in disbelief as the orchestra horribly butchered his country’s pride and honor in front of his eyes.
Interestingly, this is not the first time the band has mangled a country’s anthem.
In Feb 2015, the Egyptian army orchestra mercilessly shredded Russian national anthem in front of Vladimir Putin – who looked close to breaking down in tears as the band continued to serenade him with their non-existent talent.
Perhaps Egyptian government should look into upgrading some of these instruments or just hire trained professionals to impress its foreign dignitaries.
