Holiday travel can be a nightmare for many, but one quick-thinking woman made sure that for dozens of bus passengers it didn’t end up in disaster.
An Ontario Northland bus was driving from Sudbury on its way to Toronto on Thursday when the driver suddenly passed out. Passengers reportedly scrambled as they tried to figure out what to do.
“There was a bit of a commotion at the front, and then someone turned around and yelled, ‘Can anyone drive a bus,’” passenger Laurie Gennings recounted. "And at that point we all kind of panicked because the bus was still moving.”
@OntNorthland almost died today when our driver passed out at the wheel. Luckily a passenger pulled us to the side on a packed 401. Traumatic experience. I want a refund!— Laurie Gennings (@L_Gennings) December 28, 2017
The bus had started merging into traffic after the driver lost consciousness. Without hesitation, another passenger took control of the steering wheel, moved the driver’s foot away from the gas pedal, and began easing the bus to the shoulder of Highway 401.
Constable Robert Knight commented that the situation could have ended with a much more grim outcome had the passenger not reacted the way she did.
"It could've been a lot worse if that woman hadn't stepped in when she did," he said to CBC News. "All of those people on that bus should thank her."
Unfortunately, the identity of that brave woman remains a mystery.
“I didn't get to greet her and tell her thank you after the incident, but if she's out there and she sees this — thank you very much,” Gennings said.
The bus driver, who is in his 60s and diagnosed with a non-life threatening condition, was taken to a hospital. Another driver was sent to the bus and completed the journey from there.
It takes a lot of courage and wherewithal to know when to step in during stressful and dangerous situations. Oftentimes, panic sets in and prevents individuals from making the right moves that could save lives.
Fortunately for passengers on this bus, a woman with the right mindset was among them and guided them to safety before the bus collided with another vehicle.
