While on vacation, Ivanka Trump used social media to share photos of her family. Unfortunately, one of her pictures displayed a Confederate flag flying in the background.
The photo in question was taken during a Florida vacation. In the image, Trump’s husband, Jared Kushner, is smiling while holding the couple’s son. Behind him, another boat flies a Confederate flag.
Immediately after the post went live on Twitter, social media users charged at the president’s daughter, criticizing her for making little of the flag’s significance.
To any neo-nazi, this confederate flag (in the background) is a dog-whistle...— Michael E. Mann (@MichaelEMann) December 26, 2017
Many viewed the move as symbolic, especially after President Donald Trump failed to condemn the white supremacists who rallied in Charlottesville, Virginia, back in August.
The outrage was so widespread that even the former director of the Office of Government Ethics under President Barack Obama, Walter Shaub, criticized the image.
Confederate flag over Jared's shoulder. Couldn't find four photos without one? Or is this a dogwhistle?— Walter Shaub (@waltshaub) December 26, 2017
Some people even pointed out the president’s defense of Confederate monuments and alt-right protesters as those instances seem to align with his daughter's choice to ignore the flag and what it means.
Understanding optics....Notice the family picture that sends a message to the ALT RIGHT supporters of her father? This is DELIBERATE. Confederate flag in background over left shoulder. Shame on you @IvankaTrump https://t.co/QG3khWUndW— BeTheChange (@BeChangeToday) December 27, 2017
The White House has yet to respond to the critical backlash.
If this was, indeed, coincidental, one would imagine that someone whose family name has recently become synonymous with white supremacy would be more careful when snapping and sharing photos online.
