Video Shows Workers Scrambling To Save Their Lives After Dam Breaks

The Nam Ao Hydropower Project in Laos was under construction at the time of the incident. However, the workers claimed they weren’t responsible for the break.

A distressing video making rounds on the internet shows a group of workers fleeing for their lives after an under construction dam unexpectedly burst, causing a destructive flash flood and barely giving people in the vicinity a chance to escape.

The footage, captured in the Xaysomboun province in Laos earlier this month, showed brown, muddy water escaping the Nam Ao Hydropower Project in Phaxay District. The flood toppled several trees before submerging the construction site and overwhelming the banks of the Nam Ao River.

An unidentified woman can be heard screaming in the background as workers abandoned their tasks and tried to get to a higher ground. One of them even jumped out of a moving tractor, leaving the machinery to roll backwards on its own until it was blocking the passage for two other trucks struggling to get around it.

Unfortunately, the video shows them stuck behind the tractor when the raging water hit them.

The hydroelectric dam had been under construction since 2015. The Bothong Inter Group, the company building the dam, said it was 85 percent completed when it burst due to heavy rain from upstream, according to the Vientiane Times.

While the flooding affected at least seven villages and damaged crops, no casualties or serious injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, as the Lao News Agency reported, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is currently investigating the incident and estimating the damages.
