In 1970, a high school girl named Vicki Allen broke up with her 17-year-old boyfriend, Adrian Pearce, from Edmonton, Canada.
However, as Allen parted ways with Pearce, she gave him a Christmas present the same day.
Since then, Pearce, now 64, has kept the gift wrapped and placed it under the Christmas tree almost each year.
His story made headlines in Canadian Press after he wrote a Facebook post:
"I had a long walk home and I was all upset and angry, and all the things you feel when somebody breaks up with you," Pearce told CBC News. "And so I fired the present under the Christmas tree. After my family opened their gifts at Christmas, there was still one Christmas gift left and it's the gift this girl Vicki had given me. I told my family I'm never going to open that present."
Pearce is now married to another woman and lives in Alberta. He said his wife enjoys the mystery of it and often teases him for not opening the gift for so many years.
So why has he kept the gift unwrapped?
Before the mystery gift turns 50 after three years, Pearce wants to find Allen so they can open it together.
"Perhaps she can be found and share in the celebration," Pearce said.
He also wants to hold a "contest" in which people would donate money to guess what the gift is and the proceeds would go to a charity.
As far as people are concerned, though, many on social media have already started guessing what's inside the present:
