U.S. Olympic gymnast Simone Biles has been showing off her incredible skill set on “Dancing with the Stars” since the beginning of the show’s current season. Her fans adore her, the audience clearly loves her, but just recently, she had a slight problem with the judges and hosts piling on about her facial expressions.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist received some stinging feedback from the judges following her dance performance during the latest episode. After her Paso Doble performance, Judge Carrie Ann Inaba admitted she saw improvement, but added the Olympic gold medalist should be careful not to dance “like a metronome.”
Judge Julianne Hough had the same opinion, “I don’t know if the smile is authentic because you want to smile, or if it’s just because you rehearsed it that way. … I really just want to see some rawness come out,” he said.
But it was when host Tom Bergeron also jumped in with the basically, the smile-shaming, when Biles snapped back — and her response was everything.
“I was waiting for you to smile at some of the compliments, you didn’t,” said Bergeron.
“Smiling doesn’t win you gold medals,” the 20-year-old responded.
The comment received instant praise from the audience, with many taking to social media to applaud the gymnast.
And just like that, every girl in America will start telling men who say to smile "smiling doesn't win you gold medals." YAS, GIRL ???? #dwts— Elise Williams (@melisexo) May 9, 2017
"smiling doesn't win you gold medals" is likely going to be my life motto from here on out, yas @Simone_Biles yas ??????— Carley Berman (@crlybrmn) May 9, 2017
"Smiling doesn't win you Gold medals." Oh Simone Biles you savage. #DWTS— Eric Mueller (@EricJ_Mueller) May 9, 2017
Bergeron quickly realized his mistake and tweeted in favor of the star contestant, praising her witty response.
Loved @Simone_Biles crisp response to my clumsy question. Curious how she felt about judges comments, I unwittingly added to the smile pile.— Tom Bergeron (@Tom_Bergeron) May 9, 2017
Biles also opened up about her feelings backstage.
"I feel like everyone has their own opinion, clearly, and I feel it's just how you take it," she said.
"I feel like I am trying, I am being honest, but if they don't see that, I don't know what more I can do," she added, explaining how she had tears in her eyes before handling the criticism like a pro. "I had tears in my eyes. I almost ran to the bathroom at one point, but I pulled it together."
Suffice to say that Biles most definitely knows how to compete, take criticism and snap back when it goes overboard.
