Senior girls at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Arizona made an incredibly ignorant, foolish decision when they spelled out a racial slur using letters on their shirts for senior class picture day.
Six girls chose to spell out “NI**GER*”; the full collection of shirts initially read “BEST*YOU’VE*EVER*SEEN*CLASS*OF*2016.”
According to ABC 15, Jill Hanks—executive director of community relations for Tempe Union High School District—stated that, "We are absolutely aware and outraged by this behavior. The students will be disciplined in accordance with district policy and while we don't discuss specific discipline I can tell you that we will be addressing the obvious need for sensitivity training in this case.’”
Desert Vista’s principal, Dr. Christine Barela, also condemned the students’ actions, affirming in a letter to parents that, “We want to let you know we share your outrage and disappointment over the actions of a handful of our students today. We want to make it crystal clear those actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated at Desert Vista.”
The students have been put on a 5-day suspension, but the Internet is vying for further action.
Some individuals created a Change.org petition calling for the expulsion of the six involved students and the school’s principal, and it has already garnered over 38,000 signatures.
